Nov 21, 2011, 19:39 GMT
New York - The UN Children's Fund teamed with the popular MTV network to launch Monday a programme fighting human trafficking in Latin America with the assistance of the band Calle 13, winner of nine Latin Grammy awards.
The UNICEF multi-media campaign is intended to raise awareness of the exploitation of thousands of children and adolescents in Latin America in the evasive but lucrative sex and drug trades.
The International Organization for Migration estimated that sex trafficking in Latin America generated about 16 billion dollars in business a year. It said 35,000 women in Colombia are sold into the sex business that amassed 500 million dollars a year.
Calle 13 will lend its music to the UNICEF campaign, which will be aired in Hispanic communities in the United States as well as in Latin America.
