Germany distributes Italian organic scam data as tracing begins
Dec 12, 2011, 16:36 GMT
Berlin - Germany's government has received data from Rome on an Italian organic food scam and distributed it to officials nationwide as a hunt widens for flour, fruit and other commodities that were fraudulently labelled.
Last week Italian police seized 2,500 tons of food in Verona which allegedly did not meet the criteria for being labelled as organic. In Germany, by far the biggest market in Europe for premium-priced 'bio' food, the inquiry triggered shock among shoppers.
The Federal Agriculture and Food Agency in Bonn said distribution records had been received and were being sent to the German states where inspectors would check what had reached Germany.
They would intercept any suspect food from the Verona wholesaler that was still on sale, the agency said.
