Report: Faulty breast implants put 30,000 French women at risk
Dec 20, 2011, 17:12 GMT
Paris - Around 30,000 French women may be advised to have their breast implants removed over fears they could cause serious health problems including cancer, the country's Liberation daily reported Tuesday.
Eight cases of cancer have been reported among women who received implants made by the now defunct Poly Implant Prothese (PIP)company.
A 53-year-old woman with the implants died in late November of a rare form of breast lymphoma.
The French manufacturer was discovered to have been using a substandard, industrial silicone in the implants that increases the risk of the implant tearing.
Liberation reported that the Health Ministry would, by the end of the week, ask women who received PIP implants to have them removed.
Over 2,000 women have already begun legal action over the implants.
Worldwide, there are around 300,000 wearers of PIP implants, according to Liberation.
