Brazil to return 46 tonnes of illegally-imported US hospital waste
Dec 21, 2011, 19:01 GMT
Rio de Janeiro - Brazilian authorities ordered the return to the United States of 46 tonnes of hospital waste which were illegally imported and seized in the northeastern Brazilian city of Recife.
The Brazilian daily O Estado de Sao Paulo reported Wednesday, citing Brazilian Federal Customs sources, that the firm that imported the waste in October will be liable for all costs incurred in returning it.
Brazilian law recommends destroying illegal imports, but in this case the view of the Brazilian Institute for the Environment (Ibama) prevailed. Ibama demanded that the waste be returned to where it came from.
The waste included sheets, pillow cases, latex gloves, catheters and syringes, among others. Brazilian authorities classified it as highly-polluting.
The return of this material was negotiated with US authorities and has their support.
