Hong Kong bans China poultry imports after bird flu death
Jan 1, 2012, 5:37 GMT
Hong Kong - Hong Kong Sunday banned some poultry imports from mainland China following the death of a man from bird flu in the border city of Shenzhen.
Officials said live poultry, eggs and chilled and frozen poultry from an area of Shenzhen would be suspended for 21 days.
The ban covers a 13-kilometre radius around the home of a 39-year-old bus driver who died Saturday after being diagnosed with the H5N1 virus.
The first human fatality from bird flu in China in 18 months has triggered fears of a fresh outbreak of the virus that has killed 343 people worldwide since 1997.
'We will continue to closely monitor the latest situation about the avian flu case and take appropriate follow-up action,' a Centre for Food Safety spokesman said.
Most of the chickens consumed in Hong Kong come from the mainland.
