LEAD: Belgium records about 100 women with PIP implants
Jan 7, 2012, 16:12 GMT
Brussels - About 100 women in Belgium have reported they have breast implants from the scandal-tainted French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), the Le Soir newspaper reported Saturday, as worries about their rupture risk continued to spread across Europe.
The president of the Royal Belgian Society for Plastic Surgery told the daily that the number could still change.
'We don't know if it is a number that is close to the total or only partial,' Jean-Luc Nizet said.
The Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products said five women in Belgium have had their implants removed since December 2010 - four of them because of a leak, the Belga news agency reported. The fifth woman had her implants preventively removed.
The number of women with PIP implants is expected to be lower in the country than elsewhere because only small private hospitals used the products, not larger medical facilities, Belga reported.
