Complex exercises can help the old be more secure on their feet
Zurich (dpa) - Research by scientists from the Institute of Movement Sciences and Sport at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) shows that multi-task exercises can help prevent motor deficits in old age. Engaging in dual tasks, such as walking forward while holding a glass of water and counting backwards or standing on one leg and naming rivers, improves mental fitness and helps prevent falls, according to the researchers. It is important that the task isn't too easy, as the exercise is only of benefit if it tests the pensioner to his or her limit and beyond.
Winter blues need to be taken seriously
Munich (dpa) - Many people experience mood swings and sadness in winter but if the symptoms persist for longer than two weeks then the problem could be linked to depression and it is advisable to seek medical help, according to Munich psychologist Benjamin Martens. Fresh air, daylight and the company of others all help combat the winter blues. Experts recommend spending every available moment in the open air or meeting up with friends to help overcome any feelings of depression.
Small breaks can help prevent burnout
Dusseldorf (dpa) - Employees can help avoid feelings of burnout by incorporating small breaks into their daily work routine such as walking around the block during lunchtime or ensuring that the weekend is free from all appointments.
The challenges posed by everyday working life can only be overcome when the body enjoys regular periods of relaxation, says Professor Johannes Siegrist from the Dusseldorf Institute for Medical Sociology. If workers don't take enough breaks then they feel overstretched faster and at some stage will face burnout.
Also, employees working in a permanently stressful environment feel under pressure faster when an unexpected event occurs as a lack of rest periods means they are incapable of reacting appropriately to the situation.
