Bird flu detected in India's Orissa state
Jan 9, 2012, 11:50 GMT
New Delhi - India's eastern state of Orissa Monday sounded an alert after a case of bird flu was confirmed in the region, a news report said.
The state government had sent samples of 300 birds to a laboratory after hundreds of crows died, the IANS news agency reported.
'The laboratory informed us on Sunday that a poultry bird was found positive for bird flu,' Satyabrata Sahu, a fishery and animal resources department official, said.
Sahu said local authorities were directed to stop movement of poultry from the affected areas.
Officials from the state's 30 districts had also been instructed to send samples from birds that had flu-like symptoms.
The last outbreak of bird-flu in India occurred in September in the eastern state of West Bengal. India has several outbreaks of the H5N1 virus since 2007, but no reported cases of infections in humans.
