Report: Rats nibble at paralyzed patient in Indian hospital
Jan 11, 2012, 13:25 GMT
New Delhi - Rats attacked a paralyzed man in an Indian hospital, seriously injuring him while staff allegedly slept, IANS news agency reported Wednesday.
The patient, 70, was on the intensive care unit of the Mathura Das Mathur government hospital in the northwestern city of Jodhpur.
The rats reportedly nibbled on his ears, nose, lips and cheeks, as well as damaging the tubes of the ventilator he was hooked up to.
Due to his paralysis, the man was unable to fend off the rodents when the incident took place, early Tuesday.
'The hospital staff - from doctors to security guards - go to sleep before 11pm, leaving the patients on their own,' a doctor in the hospital told IANS, on condition of anonymity.
Hospital authorities did not confirm that rats had attacked the man's face, but its superintendent Arvind Mathur said they were investigating the case and had asked for professional help with rodent control.
In 2009, a newborn baby reportedly died in Jodhpur's Ummed government hospital after being attacked by rats, IANS wrote.
