Australia's biggest state to close tanning studios
Feb 4, 2012, 7:40 GMT
Sydney - Australia's biggest state will force tanning studios to close by the end of 2014, based on research from the Cancer Council showing that anyone using a solarium before the age of 35 doubled their risk of getting a melanoma.
New South Wales state Environment Minister Robyn Parker said Saturday the three-year delay would give the industry time to shift to a new line of business.
New South Wales is the first jurisdiction in Australia to ban sun beds.
'Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world and this ban is long overdue,' Parker said on World Cancer Day.
The ban announcement followed a television campaign launched by the council after the 2007 skin cancer death of 26-year-old Melbourne woman who was a frequent sun-bed user.
