BJP asks Rahul to own up family's 'failures'

Apr 16, 2007, 15:00 GMT

New Delhi, April 16 (IANS) Angered over Congress MP Rahul Gandhi crediting his Nehru-Gandhi family for the break-up of Pakistan, the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday asked him to take the blame for the subcontinent's partition.

'If Rahul Gandhi wants to take credit for certain things by ignoring the contribution by others, then he has to take the blame for partition of India, creation of Pakistan, creation of PoK ('Pakistan-occupied Kashmir') and allowing Pakistan to hand over Aksai Chin to China,' BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said.

He also asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son to own up the emergency rule during 1975-77, terrorism in Punjab in the 1980s, the IPKF misadventure in Sri Lanka, the anti-Sikh violence in the capital in 1984 and promoting and protecting Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi who is an accused in the Bofors gun payoff deal.

Javadekar was reacting to Rahul Gandhi's comments during his election tour in Uttar Pradesh Saturday that 'when my family decides to do anything it does it. Be it the freedom struggle, the division of Pakistan or taking India to the 21st century.'

The BJP spokesman said: 'The remarks also expose his limited vision. His assertion that the division of Pakistan was his family's achievement is also absurd and has proved a diplomatic disaster. The Congress may defend him but let the Ministry of External Affairs validate his statement.'

He also attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for projecting Rahul Gandhi as the future leader. 'This is not only preposterous but is the worst kind of sycophancy stemming from the politics of dynasty.

'The eulogy of a man who does not see beyond his family and does not recognise their own (of Congress) prime ministers Lal Bahadur Shastri and P.V. Narsimha Rao is undemocratic and condemnable,' said the BJP spokesman.

Mr. Rahul Gandhi exposed himself of his limitted knowledge of the struggle made by the then great selfless and righteous personnals before acheving Indipedence.Perhaps he may not be know about his paternal grand father and how & why he got the sirname Gandhi. Instead of listening to half knowledgeble friends, he should read complete Indian History since Invation of Moguls to the assassination of our Father of the Nation Mr.Mahatma Gandhi. He should first travel the lengh and breadth of India to understand about the Indian people and their culture before making any comments of this nature.

Mr. R. Gandhi should know that the freedom was not achieved by the efforts of a single person or family. He should also know that many things done during Nehru's time or during the period of Mrs. Gandhi were not correct. It was perhaps Neharu's mistake to have refused the offer of permanent member seat in the security council, UNO, for which so much effort is being made by present administration. The only defeat that India suffered after independence was during his period, and that too only because of taking wrong policy decisions. If it would have been for Neharu, Nizam's domain would have remained out side Indian Republic for long or would have created much more problem for India than any other state of this Republic. These are not only a few points that he should pay attention to, but there are many more, which is beyond debate apart from imposition of emergency rule etc. Yes, one thing which is becoming obvious is that the domination of their rule leads to subversion of constitutional aouthorities, they perhaps need a judiciary committed to their decisions (note the changes made during Mrs Gandhi's period), governors acting as the representative of their will and desire and not as a constitutional functionaries and so on.
He should also know that India progressed perhaps in a much better way when someone from them were not in power.
