Delhi nursery admission age fixed at four years

Sep 3, 2007, 15:44 GMT

New Delhi, Sep 3 (IANS) Thousands of tiny tots in the capital will now have to stay away from school bags for one more year. The Delhi government Monday fixed four years as the minimum age for children's admission to nursery classes, and five years for class one.

The Delhi cabinet in its meeting decided that the minimum age norm for the nursery admission would be binding on all schools in the capital, and the class one admission criterion would be applicable to all government schools, an official statement said.

Last month, the Delhi High Court refused to consider the city government's request to change the cut-off age for nursery admissions from three years to three-and-a-half years.

The court asked an expert committee to discuss the issue with the education department of the Delhi government.

The Delhi government also decided to depute security guards at all government schools in the city following a recent revelation of a teacher's alleged involvement in forcing girl students into prostitution.

Uma Khurana, a mathematics teacher at the Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Darya Ganj in central Delhi, provoked wrath of a mob at the school last week when a private TV news channel telecast video clippings purportedly showing her involvement in a pornography and prostitution racket.
