Indian capital on alert after terror threats
Dec 3, 2007, 13:37 GMT
New Delhi - The Indian capital was put on alert after intelligence reports suggested the possibility of a terror strike in the near future, news reports said Monday.
'The Intelligence Bureau has informed Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal and security agencies that they have received inputs that market places and crowded areas may be targeted by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LET), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) and Harkatul-Jihad-e-Islami (HUJI) militants along with local support,' a senior Delhi police official was quoted as saying by PTI news agency.
While the LET and JEM are Pakistan-based Islamic militant organizations, the HUJI is based in Bangladesh.
'We have taken unprecedented security measures and are on full alert,' Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said.
He said additional forces, including bomb-disposal squads and sniffer dogs, had been deployed at the Delhi underground railway stations, the capital's two main rail stations, bus terminals, cinema halls and busy marketplaces.
Three bomb blasts ahead of the Diwali festival in October 2005 killed at least 60 people and injured more than 200 in busy market areas in the Indian capital.
