Dec 13, 2007, 12:52 GMT
Udaipur, Dec 13 (IANS) Hindustan Zinc Ltd (HZL), a group company of London Stock Exchange-listed metals and mining firm Vedanta Resources Plc, Thursday started production at a new zinc smelter at Chanderiya in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan.
'The smelter has been commissioned in a record 20 months. The new smelter would increase the total metal production capacity of HZL to 670,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) as well as bring it closer to its mission to produce one million tonnes of finished metal by 2010,' a company statement said.
To support the increased production capacity, HZL's Rampura Agucha mine in Rajasthan is also being expanded to increase ore production from 3.75 million TPA to 5.0 million TPA, taking HZL's total ore production capacity to 7.10 million TPA.
Hindustan Zinc had announced a Rs.50-billion investment in Rajasthan a few days ago.
The company would invest in expansion of mining and milling activities, along with setting up of a new lead and zinc smelting plant in Chanderiya.
