Reliance Communications moves Delhi High Court
Dec 14, 2007, 10:15 GMT
New Delhi, Dec 14 (IANS) In yet another twist to the saga of radio frequency allocation, Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Communications, India's second largest mobile phone service operator, Friday approached the Delhi High Court.
The reason for the move was not immediately known, but sources close to the issue said the CDMA (code division multiple access) major took this step as a protective measure because of fears that GSM (global system for mobile communications) players under the aegis of the Cellular Operators Association of India, too, may approach the high court.
All this started after the telecommunications tribunal Wednesday lifted the restriction of allocating airwaves to telecommunications operators with new wireless licenses, something that has hurt GSM operators.
The department of telecommunications can now start allocating radio spectrum to those who plan to roll out mobile phone services in new markets.
