India test-fires Akash surface-to-air missile
Jan 30, 2006, 10:18 GMT
New Delhi - India on Monday successfully tested an advanced version of its air-defence Akash surface-to-air missile from a military range in eastern Orissa state.
The Akash, Hindi for 'sky,' was test-fired from the Interim Test Range to assess its accuracy against a pilotless target aircraft, said a defence ministry official who did not wish to be named.
The test was the latest in a recent series of launches of the indigenously developed missile, which has been tested five times since last month. Three tests, all successful, have taken place since Saturday, the PTI news agency reported.
Akash, a multitarget missile, has a range of 25 kilometres and can carry a 50-kilogram payload.
It is one of the five missiles that are being developed under India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, which was launched in 1983.
The 5.6-metre missile uses a ramjet propulsion system. Its surveillance radar, also developed indigenously, can simultaneously keep track of 64 aerial targets over a range of 40 to 60 kilometres.
