India, Russia designing fifth-generation fighter

Feb 16, 2006, 13:00 GMT

New Delhi - India and Russia are designing a fifth-generation fighter jet, Russian ambassador Vyacheslav Trubnikov revealed in media reports Thursday.

The Russian envoy said the two countries had reached an agreement for designing, producing and marketing of the interceptor-fighter jet.

'It is a brilliant example of international cooperation. Starting from design, it is something new,' Trubnikov was quoted by the Hindu newspaper as saying. 'It goes beyond the relationship of a buyer and seller, it is a mutual effort everywhere.'

Local media has reported that the Indian Air Force has been talking with Russian firms such as MiG and Sukhoi Holdings for the production of such aircraft.

Since the 1990s, fighter aircrafts have been categorized in various 'generations' with the latest designs representing the 'fifth generation.'

India and Russia are also considering jointly developing multi-purpose transport aircraft.

Russia, which supplies over 70 per cent of the military hardware used by the Indian defence forces, has been collaborating with New Delhi for the manufacture of defence equipment and weapons systems in recent years.

The two countries jointly developed the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, which can achieve speeds of up to 2.8 Mach, or nearly three times the speed of sound.

In December, India and Russia signed a pact to jointly develop the next generation of weapons systems. In the same month, India signed a 500-million-dollar deal with Russia for Smerch long-range surface-to-surface multiple rocket systems.

BrahMos is truly one of the deadliest new weapons in the world. It's not just the speed, which already makes them practically unstoppable even by US tech, but the maneauvering the missile performs to avoid countermeasures and its small radar signature that make it so dangerous. They can be land, sea, and air-launched, making it easy to launch concentrated volleys of them at a carrier group, giving them a near 100% hit probability.

In other words, any ship on the receiving end of a BrahMos missile strike today is a dead ship. If this missile is exported, it's going to have a major impact on the balance of power at sea; multi-billion $$$ carriers and the further billions in aircraft and missiles aboard are not easily replaced!

I don't believe the U.S. would still be building 5 billion dollar carriers if they felt a threat existed that could not be defeated, and had a kill probability of 100%. I'm sure they are confident they can protect them, or they simply would not send them to sea!
The U.S. had a supersonic cruise missle long before the Brahmos came along, they just didn't advertise it. You simply can't shoot what you can't detect, and that applies to ship's as well as aircraft. I believe the technology is called Stealth.
The dominant power in the world today will always be the country that leads in computer science, computational processing power and software development. Last time I checked the top 100 Supercomputer statistics, Russia and India were both dwarfed by the U.S.A. IBM only sold their desktop and laptop division to China, not BlueGeneL, or the Cluster Division.

No country in world has the capability to counter a super sonic Brahmos at present or would be able to do so in near future. Even the inventing countries India and Russia who have incredible expertise in this field would consume considerable time to find a counter measure against a flying missile with thrice the speed of sound just above ten meters of the sea and ground.Once it is fired,it would reach the target with deadly accuracy without being seen by the enemy radar. The US is defenceless against a Brahmos and their defence experts are now not in a position to defend their naval fleet.India and Russia are engaged in further research and development to give this lethal missile a striking range of 1000km with mac 8 speed.Brahmos is going to play a vital role alongwith Akash and Prithvi in missiles defence of india.Russia and India now in a position to deploy the best missile defence world has ever seen.
