Taiwan concerned about China's building aircraft carrier
Nov 26, 2006, 14:15 GMT
Taipei - China is building its first aircraft carrier and plans to launch its first carrier battle group in 2020, posing a serious threat to Taiwan's security, a Taiwanese newspaper said on Sunday, quoting a military official.
Chen Yung-kang, head of the Defense Ministry's Integration Evaluation Office, made the warning at a seminar on China's growing military buildup against Taiwan, the United Daily News (UDN) said.
Chen said that when China bought the aircraft carrier Varyag from Ukraine in 1998, Beijing claimed it was going to turn it into a floating amusement park, but China has been repairing it at the Dalian Shipyard to try to restore its power system.
'China is not only studying Varyag's structure, but also hopes to use it to train Chinese aircraft carrier pilots,' UDN quoted Chen as saying.
'The aircraft carrier under construction is modelled on the Varyag and will be equipped with the J-11 warplanes made by the Shenyang Aircraft Industry Corp, a copy of the Russian Sukhoi Su-27,' Chen reportedly said.
The Chinese aircraft carrier will be a medium-sized aircraft carrier because it will carry about 60 or so warplanes, one-third of the 200 warplanes that can land on a US aircraft carrier, Chen said.
He urged Taiwan to expand its naval fleet to counter China's military threat from the sea.

Mexican Navy aircraft carrier?
Where is the.........
Off the shore of Cuba.
Taiwan is always concerned about everything China does.
If there are China's fishing boats near Taiwan's sea boundary, they will make a big fuss and call it a NAVAL INVASION.
If the boats are from other Asian countries, then Taiwan will say its a fishing boat fishing in those areas.
Amazing.
Beware of Chinese war ships disguised as fishing boats.
Proliferation of Arms is ON again.

Subs may help. Maybe peace will break out and cruelty will hide its horrifying face.
