Two Palestinian militants killed in Bethlehem
Apr 23, 2006, 23:41 GMT
Bethlehem - Two Palestinian militants were killed and another was injured Sunday evening in Bethlehem, Israeli media reported.
The militants were members of the al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigades, the military wing of Palestinian Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah faction.
The Ha'aretz daily reported the militants were killed by undercover Israeli soldiers operating in the West Bank town.
Israeli military sources confirmed the deaths but said the militants were killed when their vehicle hit a wall and exploded.
They added that following intelligence reports of a vehicle carrying wanted militants, army forces operating in Bethlehem set up a roadblock in an attempt halt the car.
The army spokesperson's office added that as the vehicle sped away from the roadblock, Israeli soldiers fired warning shots in the air; the car then turned to a side street, whereby it collided with a wall and exploded.
One of the militants was killed instantly, while the other died later of his wounds.
