Israeli Navy intercepts weapons ship en route to Gaza
May 14, 2006, 23:45 GMT
Tel Aviv - An Israeli Navy boat intercepted Sunday a Palestinian shipping vessel carrying explosives and mines, the Israeli Military spokesperson's office said in press release.
Navy officials said their forces identified a Palestinian boat sailing into an area in the southern Gaza Strip bordering Egypt prohibited for entry and crossing. When the boat sailed back across the border to the Gaza Strip, soldiers on the nearby military vessel told it to halt and fired warning shots when it refused to stop.
The naval force then apprehended the boat and detained its crew for questioning.
The people aboard threw several bags into the water when the boat was pursued.
Military officials said 'several hundred kilogrammes of military- grade explosives and parts of mines were found on the boat after it was intercepted.'
On May 9, Israeli Navy forces thwarted a similar weapons smuggling attempt into the Gaza Strip when 500 kilogrammes of military grade explosives were found on a shipping vessel.
