Danish and Lithuanian soldiers injured in southern Iraq

Copenhagen - Two soldiers, a Dane and a Lithuanian, were injured in two separate incidents while on patrol in southern Iraq, the Danish military said Wednesday. Both soldiers were hit in the right shoulder by bullets while on patrol near Basra on Tuesday. The Danish military command in Copenhagen said both soldiers were not seriously wounded, but that it would investigate the incidents. The Lithuanian soldier was hit while on patrol in Hartha, north of Basra, and was flown by helicopter to a field hospital. The Danish soldier was hit near a police station in Qurnah, and was also transported to a field hospital. Denmark has 530 soldiers stationed in southern Iraq under British command, with some 40 Lithuanian troops serving with that unit. Hartha has been the scene of several attacks on Danish soldiers including a blast in March that killed a Danish soldier. Three Danish soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the US-led Iraq invasion in 2003. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
