Iran launches missiles to start new round of war games (Roundup)

Nov 2, 2006, 20:12 GMT

Tehran - Iran's Islamic Revolution's Guard Corps launched several missiles Thursday at the start of a new round of war games throughout the country, including in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman where naval manoeuvres led by the US are currently taking place.

The 10-day Iranian manoeuvres code-named 'Grand Prophet (Mohammed) 2' began with the firing of various missiles including the Shahab-2 which can carry cluster warheads, as well as the more powerful Shahab-3 missile, state television IRIB reported.

The medium-range Shahab-3 missile reportedly has a range of between 1,300 and 2,000 kilometres and has caused grave concern in Israel. However, Teheran has assured the international community that the missiles are for defensive purposes only.

The commander of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guards, General Yahya Rahim-Safavi, said on Wednesday that the most important aim of the manoeuvres is to show Iran's determination to defend itself against all threats.

'These manoeuvres are neither a threat to the region nor our neighbours who are considered as our friends. Our enemies are also their enemies, though,' he said during a press conference in Tehran.

In Washington, US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the exercises show that Iran continues to be ' a source of potential instability.'

'This sort of seeming sabre rattling on the part of Iran I think just underscores the fact that Iran is at this point in time, with this regime, not a source of stability in the region,' he said.

Iran held its last military exercises in August and proclaimed to have successfully tested its first home-made fighter plane Saeqeh (Lightning), similar to the US F-18 fighter but redesigned and remodelled by Iranian experts.

So, hahat, who in your eyes are the Muslims?
Are they the Sunnis' or the Shias'.
Or maybe they are the Persians?
Hmmmm. Seems they are kinda undecided themselves.
Oh, and yeah, remember if the Soviets and The West had decided to use the bomb everybody, including the Muslims, would have been dead ten times over.
So do you think any western leader is not going to push the button if they feel threatened enough.
So stop your useless threats or you will all go the way of the useless Palestinians. The only Arabs who, even though they were promised by other Arabs they would have, do not have a homeland.

I think its a good thing that Iran does these war games. There is a huge imbalance of power in the middle east; most of the power is held by israel. It can only bring stability if the playing field becomes more leveled. And yes, Iran should be allowed to have atomic weapons if they chose. The religous folks in power it Tehran are just as mad as those in jerusalem, but somehow nobody minds the latter having access to WMD.

Sunnis, Shias they all the same. They are only culturally different. Don't forget the Irish (catholic & protestants) conflicts back in the 70s and 80s. And Islam being brutal, how bout the Catholic church and the inquisitions, the conquests, the crusades the clensing of the non believers and the scientists. How about the killing of the jews throughout european history as well as in the 1940s. How about the killing of muslims in Nigeria and in Kosovo by the Serbs and people like Milosovich. Human beings are all prone to war. Islam is getting the name because of Sept 11. But muslims have also been victims. How about creation of Israel, displacement of Palestinians. Ohh yah sure Jewish Holyland. But they occupied Egyptian territory (Sinai province), Palestinian territory (gaza, west bank), Syrian territory (Golan Heights), Lebanese territory (Shebaa firms) and it was all backed by us. And how about all the dictators in Middle east, they wouldn't be in power if it wasn't for our support. Everyone from Saddam Hussein, to King ABdullah to Hosni Mubarak.

keep in mind when you see terrorism, more muslims die because of it then any one else. I am referring to Iraq, Afghanistan, N.Africa, Indonesia. It's in their best interest to end it. But unfortunately we have radicals and d***heads in every culture.

I think there is one point of hope.

The ONLY reason Iran has these weapons is thanks to support from Russia and China. Both would like Iran/Syria/Lebanon etc. to have this power as they oppose the USA threw them. Both regimes of these country see the USA foreign policy as a threat to them.

HOWEVER: Islam is a huge threat to these regimes as well! In CHINA there are many Muslims who would like independence (possibly a hundred million or more) but they are brutaly quite down by the secular goverment. For russia there's also a thread from Muslim countries.

So 1. The current Super power China will not support the rise of Islam for obvious reasons, and 2. Russia will oppose it as well.

---

For all those who think that if Israel is wiped from the map it will mean peace -- NO, it will mean ONE THING: Victory for the islamist, the fanatics and a huge push for Moral. IT MEANS uprising in all the countries around the world. HOW MANY Muslims in Europe will join the 'new revolution'? DO YOU REALLY think they will so, ok Israel is gone, Islam is so powerful now Allah is great but umm ok lets go to sleep now. WAKE UP.

The equation is simple: EVEN if Israel is complete sh*t, the devil, whatever you want to call it, the death of Israel means the death of western civilization.

The death of Israel will be only the begining. The moment the struggly is won in the Middle east, it will pass like huge waves of fire through out the world.

Your
Call.

Iran is the Hero of the middleast and any Arab or Muslim that thinks otherwise is being misguided by either thier dosile parents or brainwashed through thier media, or have a dreamy idea that 'Why dont we all live in peace', the latter being a great idea if the West would stop trying to impose thier will on others, for thier own benefit! Sometimes the only solution is to fight, because then those who do the wrong deeds may have to question why they got themselves into this situation. WHEN BOMBS FALL ON TEL AVIV, NOONE WHO KNOWS ANYTHING WILL FLINCH, but when the bombs fall on Iran then we will see the end of this illigitimate Forign Occupying force, Israel will not be a power in the region or the middleasts colonial master! Iran is willing to fight to end this, the question is not why but when will you wake up and help.

Thanks George. Your view is very accurate and sends the meassage that time is not our ally. This push by Islamist extremists must be destroyed on the sand that it stands. We are all human and as such must live in peace with eachother. Those who oppose peace or those who oppose the few good men who will 'make' peace must be dealt with in the only way that they know - complete destruction.

Who is killed the most by muslims? Muslims!!!
Allah, the moon god of Mohammed's particular bedu tribe, is a demon who
revels in the blood of the innocents. Soon, after islam is destroyed by their own
war, what will they worship? The Anti-Christ.
Good luck with that!

Too many people talk wiothout knowledge, it was the West and in particular the US and France who supported and propt up Iraq to wage war on Iran, Iran had no choice but to go to war, and the ones using Chemical weapons(supplied by the US and France) were the Iraqis not Iranians, learn your History.
I am not a Muslim nor do I practice any other form of religion, Noone wants war, but also nooone wantS imperialism imposed on them, why should I do what you tell me to do? I should do what I want and you can go do what you want, that is freedom, not this wishy washy idea that somehow by becoming democratic you become a beacon for freedom, thats just B***S**T. We are all Humans and all of us want peace so we can deal with this great issue of our Earths Climate, you imposing your will or forcing an occupying force that is killing our people on our part of the world is why we fight, FOR NO OTHER REASON, WE DONT WANT TO IMPOSE SHARIA lAW ON THE WEST, YOU ALREADY HAVE THAT BATTLE WITH THE WAHIBI ARABS, THEY ARE NOT IRANIANS.
