Israel to investigate use of cluster bombs in Lebanon fighting

Nov 20, 2006, 0:33 GMT

Jerusalem - Israel Defence Force (IDF) chief of staff Dan Halutz ordered an investigation Sunday into the military's use of cluster bombs during the summer's 34-day war in Lebanon, Israel Television said.

According to the report, IDF ground troops did not follow correct military procedure for use of the munitions during the war. The report added that the Judge Advocate General might open a criminal investigation into the affair.

Israel has come under international criticism for using cluster munitions in southern Lebanon during the conflict. The United States, which supplied Israel with cluster bombs, announced in August that it would investigate the Jewish state's use of the weapons.

The majority of the bombs were fired during the final stage of the war.

In September, the organization Handicap International revealed that dozens of Lebanese civilians had been killed or wounded by unexploded cluster bombs since the conflict ended in August.

On Friday, Norway announced it would head an international effort to ban cluster bombs, which are not yet illegal under international law.

They are commonly called 'area denial munitions'. If I had an enemy attacking the homeland, from outside my borders, I would not hesitate to deny them the use of the ground they attack from.

It flabergasts reasonable people that someone has the gall to ask for an investigation of war methods, when the other side is attacking.

How lopsided is this?

Israel has the right to defend itself for outside attacks on it homeland!
After all, if it will not do so, it will no longer be a free nation for its
Jewsish people.

As a Catholic born in Isreal, I support the State of Isreal and its people!
God bless the people of Isreal form attacks and harm on it people.

It's ridiculous that Israel can get away with such behavior. If they are going to constantly lobby for a disproportionate amount of foreign aid from the US, the least they could do is comply with the tied demands. Actions such as these show the arrogance and contempt that Israel nation has, and the unwarranted unilateral support that the US shows towards a discriminatory state due to crooked lobbyists and politicians.

Mearsheimer and Walt are RIGHT!!! Stop exporting the safety and resources of the United States of America!

Hi
In response to different comments i would like to ask why israel has fear from outside? what are the reasons behind suiside bombers? are they terorists or teased by Israel and compelled to do so?
At one side the Falastenian people have stones in their hands while israeli's Armed forces have Tanks, F-16, etc at the other side so is it justice?
Dear Mathews why USA attacked Afghanistan after the sad demise of 9-11? i think that attack was in response to make the US nation safe but why USA does not see to others lives (Muslims) whoes blood is cheapest like water?
is this a justice? why USA and his free of cost employee Tony Blair (PM UK) shouted for chemical weapons by Iraq? humm i think they had fear that they wil kill the people but what has been done by Israel in Lebanon? were they not human?
If every thing is allowed in war then suicide bombers are allowed to attack on Israel, Bin Laden has the right to fight for his muslims brothers and sisters like 9-11 etc.
My Dear All. this is in justice in the world by USA and Israel.
one think i wish to clear that Israel has no right to live as an independent nation there in the Middle east that area was occupied by the Jews.
Anyhow do not mind these comments as they are true and based on facts.
