Jordan's King calls Abbas, urging Palestinian unity
Dec 15, 2006, 23:12 GMT
Amman - Jordan's King Abdullah II on Friday called Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to underscore the importance of 'closing Palestinian ranks,' according to a royal court statement.
'The monarch underlined the importance of uniting all efforts to foil attempts aimed at driving a wedge in the Palestinian structure,' the statement said.
The King's appeal came in the wake of accusations by the ruling Hamas group that Abbas' private guards were behind an abortive attempt on the life of Prime Minister Ismail Haniya as he returned home from Egypt on Thursday.
'We all attach hopes to the wisdom and awareness of the Palestinian leadership in its various sites to halt the security deterioration and prevent internal fighting taking place among citizens of the Palestinian people,' King Abdullah was quoted as telling Abbas.
