Lebanese cleric accuses US of using Saddam to divide Muslims
Dec 31, 2006, 18:26 GMT
Beirut - Lebanon's high ranking Shiite clergyman lashed out at the United States on Sunday, accusing it of using the execution of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to sow discord among Muslims.
'Some countries are trying to exploit (Saturday's) execution of the dictator Saddam Hussein, who is Sunni, in order to ignite discord between Sunnis and Shiites,' Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah said in a statement.
'Be aware of such discord because it's what the Americans want. They want to destroy the Muslim world by launching a cultural, political, economic and security war,' said Fadlallah.
'Saddam was a dictator who persecuted his own people regardless of their (religious) confession,' he said.
Saddam was toppled in 2003, and hanged on Saturday for ordering the deaths of 148 Shiite men and boys from the Iraqi village of Dujail after a 1982 attempt on his life there.
