Hamas reiterates non-recognition of Israel
Jan 11, 2007, 13:13 GMT
Gaza - The governing Palestinian Hamas movement reiterated Thursday that it will never recognise Israel, despite comments by Khaled Mashaal, the movement's leader-in-exile, that the Jewish state was an established fact.
'No change has been made on the movement's policy towards recognizing Israel,' Ismail Radwan, a Hamas spokesman, told reporters in Gaza.
Hamas' charter calls for replacing Israel with an Islamic state from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River.
The movement's refusal to alter its stance and recognise Israel's existence, renounce violence and honour past Israeli-Palestinian agreements, led Western states to impose an economic boycott on the Palestinian government after Hamas won the Palestinian legislative elections one year ago.
On Wednesday Mashaal, the head of the Hamas politburo, said Israel was a fact and Hamas could recognize it once a Palestinian state was established.
But Radwan reiterated that Mashaal's remarks were misunderstood. 'Mashaal meant to say that the Arabs should not talk about Israel because it was a fact but this dos not force us to recognize it.'
