Damascus - Syrian analysts on Thursday underlined the importance of the international conference on Iraq that began earlier in the day in Baghdad with regional and global powers attending, and expressed hopes that the meeting would be a prelude to direct dialogue between Syria and Washington over regional issues.
'Syria has participated in the meeting as it's desirous to find a solution to end destruction and death in Iraq,' said lawmaker Suleiman Hadad, adding that Syria would exert all-out efforts to help stop the fighting.
'Syria could play a very big role in Iraq,' he said, stressing that the Iraqi crisis would however not be solved unless there is a comprehensive solution to all regional problems.
George Jabbour, another legislator, said the conference would be a starting point for Syria and that Damascus was stressing the necessity of dialogue.
'We look forward to a dialogue to appease the suffering of the Iraqi people,' he said, noting that Syria would help in achieving Iraq's unity and support the political process there.
