Saudi, Egyptian foreign ministers to visit Amman Wednesday

Amman - Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal and his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Aboul Gheit plan to visit Amman on Wednesday for consultations with Jordan's King Abdullah II following his visit to the United States, the pro-government newspaper al-Rai reported Sunday.
The daily quoted Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Khatib as saying that the ministers would use King Abdullah's speech to the US Congress as a basis for advancing the stalled Middle East peace process.
In the first speech by an Arab leader to the US Congress, the monarch urged the United States to lead a serious effort with a view to bringing about a peaceful settlement between the Israelis and Palestinians this year.
Al-Rai noted that the new round of Arab diplomacy precedes the March 25 visit to the region by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for a meeting in Cairo of the Middle East Quartet, which comprises the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations.
The meeting would be followed by a summit on March 28 in Riyadh, which is expected to re-launch a peace initiative adopted by Arab leaders for the first time in Beirut in 2002, al-Rai said.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with King Abdullah in Amman on Saturday and saidhis talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday would tackle all outstanding issues including the 'final stage negotiations.'
