Baghdad - Iraqi army forces captured nine terrorist suspects linked to the Mahdi army during operations with US-led coalition advisors in Balad, the US military reported Monday.
The suspects were allegedly involved in carrying out sectarian attacks against Iraqi civilians in the area as well as supplying weapons used by rogue elements to commit violence and other criminal activities, the statement added.
Iraqi forces detained five additional suspects for questioning during Sunday's operation.
Balad is located 68 kilometres north of Baghdad
The Mahdi army - also known as Jaysh al-Mahdi - is an armed militia force formed by Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in June 2003.
