Lift boycott on the Palestinians, says Egypt's foreign minister
Mar 18, 2007, 11:55 GMT
Cairo - Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit has called on the international community to support the new Palestinian unity government and lift the financial boycott on it.
On Saturday, a 25-member Palestinian government unifying the rival Hamas and Fatah movements was sworn in after winning an almost uncontested vote of confidence in the Palestinian Legislative Council.
The unity government was formed after a crippling, one-year-old international boycott of the previous Hamas-led government, which had refused to renounce violence or recognize Israel.
Speaking on Saturday evening the Egyptian minister also expressed the hope that the Palestinians and Israel can soon agree a formula on the exchange of prisoners.
The Palestinians have been holding Israel soldier Gilad Shalit, kidnapped in the Gaza Strip nine months ago, whom they want to exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
