Blasts strike Baghdad, many casualties (1st Lead)

Mar 19, 2007, 12:19 GMT

Baghdad - At least four Iraqis have been confirmed killed and many more wounded in attacks in and around the capital city Baghdad on Monday.

In Sharja district in central Baghdad, three people were killed and 10 others wounded when an explosive device went off near a Shiite mosque, an Iraqi police source said.

Sharja, one of the most important commercial areas in Baghdad, has witnessed several armed attacks and explosions that have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Iraqis.

In Alwiya district also in central Baghdad, a number of Iraqis were killed and wounded in twin blasts, al-Iraqiya state TV reported.

No further details were immediately available in either attacks.

In Diyala province north-east of Baghdad, unidentified gunmen shot one Iraqi dead and wounded another, local Voices of Iraqi news agency reported citing an Iraqi police source.

Meanwhile, in an interview conducted by Iraqi al-Salam TV, Abdul-Aziz al-Hakim, head of Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), said a Shiite autonomous region in south and central Iraq should be formed 'to make up to the Iraqi people who suffered for decades under the authority of a sole party.'

Iraq's southern and central regions are mostly populated by Shiite Muslims.

SCIRI is one of Iraq's most powerful political parties and the biggest party in the Iraqi Parliament.
