Ahmadinejad: Britain should apologize for naval incident (Extra)

Tehran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke again Saturday about his government's standoff with London over over 15 British Navy personnel detained by Tehran.
The remarks followed what where apparently his first comments Friday on the March 23 incident.
On Friday, he said in a telephone interview that Britain, instead of apologizing to Iran for having violated Iranian waters, had complicated the issue by creating a political and media ballyhoo.
London insists that the British patrol boat had been in Iraqi waters.
On Saturday, speaking in the town of Andimeshk in the southern Iranian province of Khuzestan, Ahmadinejad was quoted by the official news agency IRNA as saying, 'The British occupying forces have entered into our waters and our border guards have arrested them courageously. However, the arrogant powers, because of their arrogance and egoistic mentality, do not apologize to the Iranians, (and) rather act as if we owe them something.'

There are no credible rules in the current system. The only real attempt at international law was the U.N., and they have been declared 'irrelevant'.
Rules must be universal to be credible, and everyone knows that the superpowers only enforce/obey/recognize the rules which are beneficial to them.
For international law or democracy to really work, it would have to be backed by a truly objective and universalist enforcement authority, divorced (at least temporarily) from partisan nationalistic bias, with the rules codified and enforced universally, with all nations taking part in the development of these laws.
Untill that can be achieved, it remains a matter of might-makes-right, couched in this or that ideological sanctimony as diplomatic window-dressing.

I am a 19 year old (white British) engineering student and I am not really that aware of global politics. I know enough to be able to say that I can side with the the Iranian president in as far as saying that our government is being arrogant on this issue. The sea borders are not well defined so we should accept that someone was just doing their job and as there has been no harm there is no foul.
Anyway, whatever happened to 'taking it on the chin'?
My conclusion- our government should apologise (for what it is worth).
The sailors all had GPS, so the location is known to be in Iraqi waters. Therefore, there should be no apology. This is a very slick move that Iran has done several times in the past. It is a reactionary move because they are surrounded on all borders by American and British troops.
What they are really trying to do one of two things. 1. convince their own people that they are strong and 2. Bait any Western power on their border into attacking first. Either is part of the current 'information' war. It is the same tactic Hezbollah used to goad Israel. As we recall, it worked very well for Hezbollah, even though Israeli forces destroyed much of the region. They know they don't have superior firepower, so they use superior propoganda.

Former British Ambassador Craig Murray and others are highlighting the fact that the maritime border between Iraq and Iran is contested, and the British have essentially manufactured a border to make it appear as if HMS Cornwall was within Iraqi territorial waters. The mainstream media has uniformly failed to address this issue.
'The Iran/Iraq maritime boundary shown on the British government map does not exist. It has been drawn up by the British Government. Only Iraq and Iran can agree their bilateral boundary, and they never have done this in the Gulf, only inside the Shatt because there it is the land border too. This published boundary is a fake with no legal force,' claims Murray.
'Accepting the British coordinates for the position of both HMS Cornwall and the incident, both were closer to Iranian land than Iraqi land. Go on, print out the map and measure it. Which underlines the point that the British produced border is not a reliable one.'

But the point is, as Craig Murray, points out, how can such a map exist if the subject of boundaries has never been settled between Iraq and Iran? Another point is that there is an accepted demarcation line that the Iraqis and Iranians agreed to. The question is - where is it? This Murray fellow is ludicrously claiming there is no border. If there isn't a border line, then WTF is Iran doing capturing Brit soldiers?

The UK should keep plugging away with the facts. They should make a real effort to get EU and UNSC support for sanctions. Iran could not withstand a unified diplomatic front and the threat of massive sanctions.
If the EU and UN balk, then the UK can say it honestly tried the whole 'multilateralism' thing. If necessary, the UK should destroy Iran's petrol refineries.
The US/UK might also try a naval blockade. No one could stop them. Russian and China don't have much naval capability - and they wouldn't go so far out on a limb for Immadindahead anyway.

Why is it better to take the high road? What deterrence does it provide those that would cause you harm? If the western world can be relied on by our enemies to always take the high road, then certainly piracy and terrorism become legitimate tactics and tools of statecraft. Here is what the United States can do immediately that will end the current crises and make such a crisis in the future a whole lot less likely.
All representatives of Iran in the free world (especially in Britain and the United States) should be immediately stripped of diplomatic status and arrested.
If after 24 hours the Iranians have not freed the coalition forces then the two U.S. Carrier fleets parked off Iranian shores need to begin the systematic destruction of the Iranian Navy and Air Force.
If the aforementioned declarations of dissatisfaction are not adequately understood, then U.S. and British Bomber wings need to begin the systematic destruction of the Iranian Nuclear, Electrical, communications and aviation infrastructure.
These are all things that can be done immediately, without putting a single boot on the ground, that would not only ensure an end to this crisis but would likely prevent any future incidents.
