Hezbollah ready to become political movement, EU official says

Beirut - Hezbollah would be ready to transform its armed resistance into a political movement, if all occupied Lebanese territories are freed, a Spanish representative to the European parliament said Sunday.
'One of the positive elements of our meetings with Hezbollah was that they declare that they would like to become a political movement ... when the occupation of Lebanese land end,' David Hammertzein told reporters at the end of a three-day visit by an EU delegation to Lebanon.
'When asked when the occupation ends, they said clearly the 'Shebaa Farms',' Hammertzein added.
'We all clearly support such an idea of placing Shebaa under the temporary jurisdiction of the UN and urge Syria and Israel to cooperate with this idea which will end the tension at the borders between Lebanon and Israel,' he added.
The Shiite movement Hezbollah, is the only armed militia in Lebanon and is credited with liberating south Lebanon in 2000 from Israeli occupation.
Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has requested US and EU help in pressuring Israel to withdraw from Shebaa, but so far no action has been taken. This inactivity is putting pressure on the government as UN Security council Resolution 1559, calls for the disarmament of all armed Lebanese groups, including Hezbollah.
The disputed Shebaa territory is a 25-square-kilometre region the mountainous region between Lebanon, Syria and Israel. It was captured by Israel when it seized the Golan Heights in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.
When the Israeli army withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000, ending a 22-year occupation, UN representatives determined that Shebaa was part of Syria. The UN declared that Israel had fully withdrawn from Lebanon and drew a border demarcation line known as the Blue Line.
But Lebanon later said the Shebaa Farms are Lebanese territories with Syrian consent.
The European parliamentary delegation conferred with various Lebanese officials and toured southern Lebanon to check on the United Nations Peacekeeping forces (UNIFIL), who are currently monitoring a fragile ceasefire in the area following the July 2006 summer war between Lebanon and Israel.

Hizballah is a socio-economo-political movement. They have created jobs, have schools and have hospitals. Their volunteers help build houses etc. I cannot see how a modern arab can do all this good!!!
Enough said, praise no one but the Lebanese people who suffered war after war , HA is a proxy of outsiders in the name of justices, enough is enough.

Must be one of my weak moments but must admit this is very well said. Just to add I believe Hamas in Gaza do similar things but on a smaller scale do to lack of funds. That is why in this resource bereft dirt poor area it was and still is very popular.

I remember in (2002?) the arabs met in Beirut with an olive branch for peace and Israel responded by invading Jenin that very night. And if they accepted the Olive branch the Lebanon war of 2006 would not have ever happened. Isn't it ironic they bombed the very city that offered them peace. Can't have that now can we????

The social development, the economic development, the brotherhood among arabs in general and Labanese in particular, the ducational programmes etc., are beyond other arabs and their movements. IT IS TOO BAD THEAT EURO-AMERICAN LOBBY CANNOT SEE THIS. They see them gun-touting thugs, as their own ancesstors were, causing genocide here and genocide there.
If anyone had 10%, a mere 10% humane thoughts they would have supported the Hizb-Allaah, as a public service organisation. The way theu fought Israeeli aggression, is above and beyond praise. NO OTHER ARAB COULD HAVE NOR HAD DONE IN THE PAST.
