Apr 17, 2007, 18:51 GMT
Paris - The mayor of Ramallah, Janette Khoury, has decided to rename an 'important' street in the city after outgoing French President Jacques Chirac, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday in Paris.
'I told President Chirac that the mayor of Ramallah has decided to give his name to one of the most important streets in the city,' Abbas told journalists after a one-hour meeting with Chirac, whose term ends on May 17.
Abbas said that the purpose of his visit, which kicks off a one-week European trip that will also take him to Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Bulgaria and Greece, was to thank President Chirac, 'this great man, for everything he has done for the Palestinian people.'
Abbas also said that he hoped to be able to convince the European Union to resume its financial aid to the Palestinian Authority because its embargo was favoruing 'the rise of extremism.'
