US general says sectarian violence down

Apr 25, 2007, 22:19 GMT

Washington - The top US general in Iraq said Wednesday that sectarian killings have dropped sharply and progress has been made in securing al-Anbar province, which has been a hotbed of al-Qaeda activity.

Sectarian murders in Baghdad have dropped to one-third of the number killed in January, General David Petraeus told reporters after briefing members of Congress on Capitol Hill.

Petraeus met with lawmakers as the House and Senate were expected this week pass a 124-billion-dollar spending measure for the war in Iraq containing an October deadline for the beginning of the withdrawal of US troops.

Bush has threatened to veto legislation with pullout deadlines as the dispute appears headed for a major confrontation.

The al-Anbar province north of Baghdad has been a key source of terrorist violence since Saddam Hussein's regime was toppled. Petraeus said there are still difficult challenges ahead in the area, but the Sunni Arab tribes have joined the fight against al-Qaeda.

'All of the trends are in the right direction,' Petraeus said.

To the previous idiot called (a slave of his master),it is because of idiots like you and your donot let the army do what they are supposed to do that american soldiers are being killed,if you dicks would just let the in power people handle it the war would be over a long time ago,but because of the backlash, especially through media the hands are tied,it is like getting in a fight at grade school and saying OK no pulling hair no scratching no biting no headlock for more than 3 minutes,a very childish people are what take the lives of american soldiers, not the presidency in right now, there will always be casuallties in war but the prolong is because of the bleeding heart wimps, war is war and you donot send troops in with restrictions of engagement which the democrats always put in place and it is the democrats fault even more for leaving the soldiers with their hands tied behind their backs, think that one over, what if in ww2 everyone said oh you cannot go after the germans, where would the world be now, well maybe all the complaining idiots would not be here and hitler would have his way, keep complaining and killing your soldiers winers because the more you restrict the more die!
