Al Qaida means 'the base' as in 'base of operations', not database.
The nearest word in Arabic for a database would tranlate to library.
However, it is true that they were armed with russian made weaponry and funded in part with US dollars through the intermediary of Pakistan's ISI. I think they found that it's not a good idea to pick a fight with the guy that built your HQ.

Hmm... when there is a bit more stability in the region? What do you really think will happen if they pull out now? Civil war in Iraq is what. The body count will go up tenfold.
It seems pretty convenient that the supposed leader of Al-Qaeda has been killed the same day the president plans to veto the war funding/timeline bill.
Other than this, they a great people! What else is there to know?

Can a good Muslim be a good American?
I sent that question to a friend who worked in Saudi Arabia for 20 years.
The following is his reply:
Theologically - no. Because his allegiance is to Allah, the moon god of
Arabia .
Religiously - no. Because no other religion is accepted by his Allah except
Islam (Quran, 2:256)
Scripturally - no. Because his allegiance is to the five pillars of Islam
and the Quran (Koran).
Geographically - no. Because his allegiance is to Mecca, to which he turns
in prayer five times a day.
Socially - no. Because his allegiance to Islam forbids him to make friends
with Christians or Jews.
Politically - no. Because he must submit to the mullah (spiritual leaders),
who teach annihilation of Israel and destruction of America, the great
Satan.
Domestically - no. Because he is instructed to marry four women and beat
and scourge his wife when she disobeys him (Quran 4:34).
Intellectually - no. Because he cannot accept the American Constitution
since it is based on Biblical principles and he believes the Bible to be
corrupt.
Philosophically - no. Because Islam, Muhammad, and the Quran do not allow
freedom of religion and expression. Democracy and Islam cannot co-exist.
Every Muslim government is either dictatorial or autocratic.
Spiritually - no. Because when we declare 'one nation under God,' the
Christian's God is loving and kind, while Allah is NEVER referred to as
heavenly father, nor is he ever called love in the Quran's 99 excellent
names.
Therefore after much study and deliberation...perhaps we should be very
suspicious of ALL MUSLIMS in this country. They obviously cannot be both
'good' Muslims and good Americans. Call it what you wish....it's still the
truth.
If you find yourself intellectually in agreement with the above statements,
perhaps you will share this with your friends. The more who understand this,
the better it will be for our country and our future.

Can Americans today see the similarities between Hitler's Germany and Bush's America? Of course, the Germans said that they couldn't have known the evil that the Third Reich was capable of. It is perhaps unfair to say that every American who isn't doing everything possible now to stop the insanity is personally morally responsible for the death of every Iraqi.
However, there is an immoral crime of the highest order being committed in America, and somebody is morally responsible. History teaches us lessons if we care to learn them

I engaged in some forms of protest
Although the forms of protest I engaged in were mocked and derided by the government and by those in the media,
I did everything I could do and I sure felt good about myself as I protested
If it weren't for the fact that the government would arrest and possibly kill me, I would have done more
I didn't see anything directly, so I wasn't sure of how bad it actually was
people in positions of high authority convinced me that whatever they were doing was for the best

Anything I might have done wouldn't have made any difference
The people who are doing the work of the government are 'our troops', and must be supported in whatever they have to do on our behalf
The alleged victims of my government aren't fully human, and their lives aren't worth even the slightest inconvenience or risk to our lives
The alleged victims of my government have a false and evil religion, and my true religion gives me the right to eliminate them
After the sufferings we've faced, no one can dare tell us what to do
What my country is doing is actually for the improvement of the lives of what busybodies describe as its 'victims'
My country right or wrong (no, sorry, that is someone else - the Germans weren't that stupid)
Our leaders are particularly blessed and wise, with a direct line to God, and would never do the wrong thing.

Maybe it's a good thing that they killed him, but how many others are there waiting in the wings to carry on? Too much time seems to be spent on trying to get one man like Osama. Does the U.S. think that if Bush was to be gone for one reason or another, someone else couldn't take his place? Well said. Actually it is much less than 6%, it is a tiny handful of people who are hellbent on dominating strategically important parts of the world. And yet even with the most high-tech weaponry in the world they are losing in spectacular fashion.

You'll find the 20,000 figure was quoted by your own state department yesterday - see the article on this site under 'Terrorist Attacks Worldwide'. I assume, since you apparently belong to the land of the free (or is that Fear), that your own government wouldn't lie to you about such matters ?
This entire issue proves how naive Bush's 'War on Terror' notion of a united enemy is. The enemy is not one 'bloc', but elements of a civil war; basically the Shia and the Sunni. The Sunni are tired of outside al Qaeda interference. The Iraqi people, being human, are tired of living in fear, and have mixed feelings, seeing the U.S. presence as vital to their safety, while at the same time seeing our presence as a trigger for further violence.
The underlying sad story is our total failure to support the Iraqis, such as translators, who have directly supported the U.S. efforts; and we are now in the process of evicting some of those people from their current residence within the Green Zone, which is only 4 square miles in area. We have not offered asylum in the U.S. to those who have helped us, despite promises of doing so.
General Petraeus commented on the Sunni rejection of al Qaeda actions, and at this point, the death of the al Qaeda leader in Iraq is not verified:

'Sunni insurgents and the so-called Sunni resistance are still forces that must be reckoned with, as well,' Petraeus said. 'However, while we continue to battle a number of such groups, we are seeing some others joining Sunni Arab tribes in turning against al Qaeda in Iraq and helping transform Anbar province and other areas from being assessed as lost as little as six months ago to being relatively heartening.'
Petraeus said the United States 'will continue to engage with Sunni tribal sheikhs and former insurgent leaders to support the newfound opposition of some to al Qaeda, ensuring that their fighters join legitimate Iraqi security force elements to become part of the fight against extremists.'
He said it is part of the effort to 'reach out to moderate members of all sects and ethnic groups to try to drive a wedge between the irreconcilables and the reconcilables, and help the latter become part of the solution instead of part of the problem.'
