Cheney arrives in Aqaba for talks with Jordan's king

Amman - US Vice President Dick Cheney arrived at Jordan's Red Sea port of Aqaba Sunday on the final leg of a Middle East tour. Cheney, who flew in from Egypt, is expected to have talks with King Abdullah II and other senior Jordanian officials on a variety of hot issues including the situation in Iraq, official said. High on the agenda will also be the standoff between Western powers and Iran over its nuclear programme and the prospects of bringing the Palestinians and Israelis back to the negotiating table, they added. The monarch was expected to urge the US administration to give priority to the establishment of peace between Israel and its Arab neighbours on the basis of the Arab plan that was re-launched recently by the Arab summit in Riyadh. Earlier Sunday, King Abdullah cancelled a scheduled visit to Ramallah for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after bad weather blocked his helicopter's flight to the Palestinian territories. Cheney, who so far visited Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, was reportedly seeking support of the so-called Arab quartet for a possible US military strike against Iran in case it went ahead with its uranium enrichment drive. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
