Baghdad - Iraqi police forces arrested Tuesday a suspected leader of Tawhid and Jihad terrorist organisation and two of his aides in a security operation in northern Iraq, independent Voices of Iraq news agency reported.
Kirkuk district police chief Sarhad Qader told the agency that police, acting on intelligence tips on the presence of suspects in al-Riad district, 70 kilometres south-west of Kirkuk, raided the area in the early hours of Tuesday.
They arrested two persons and seized a large amount of arms and ammunition, Qader said.
'It turned out later that one of the two persons is an amir (leader) and the other is an aide who both belong to the Tawhid and Jihad organization,' Qader added.
Two persons, Qader says, 'confessed they had carried out terrorist operations in the area during the past three years.'
Kirkuk lies 250 kilometres north-east of Baghdad.
