Jerusalem Gay Pride parade begins amid protests, high security

Jun 21, 2007, 14:47 GMT

Jerusalem - Thousands of members of Israel's gay community flocked to Jerusalem Thursday afternoon as the city's controversial Gay Pride parade got underway, amid a heightened police presence ahead of expected demonstrations by ultra-Orthodox Jews opposed to the event taking place in the holy city.

The parade went ahead after the Israeli Supreme Court on Thursday afternoon rejected last-minute petitions against it taking place.

A planned post-parade rally at Jerusalem's Liberty Bell Park, which was to have taken place after the parade, was called off

Organizers of the parade expect some 5,000 participants, who will march down the city's King David Street, under the protection of as many as 7,000 police officers.

Police had earlier in the day arrested an ultra-Orthodox Jew carrying a very small homemade explosive which he had intended to set off to scare people away from the event.

Demonstrators also burned garbage cans in an utlra-Orthodox neighbourhood in the city, and 1,500 demonstrated at the entrance to Jerusalem against the parade.

The parade has aroused the ire of religious Jews, Christians and Muslims, and led opponents to take to the streets to demonstrate against it.

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Israelis demonstrated in Jerusalem late Wednesday, burning garbage containers and throwing stones at police, while hundreds more held similar protests in the ultra-Orthodox Tel Aviv suburb of Bnei Brak.

Protests leading up to the parade last year turned violent for days in advance, and leaders of the Jerusalem Open House, which organizes the event, were forced to hold it in a closed stadium far removed from the city centre to ease the tensions.

Gay Rights are all wrong!Jun 21st, 2007 - 19:01:25

There will never be peace in the Middle East until there is justice for the Palestinians, and there will be no justice for the Palestinians until Israel is destroyed, which will happen. But it will not be a Muslim army that destroys Israel; it will be The Almighty God that will destroy Israel because the Israelis disobey The Law. Most Israelis are secular-minded and irreligious; many violate The Sabbath, fornicate and condone homosexuality. Some Israelis even eat pork. These and other sinful actions by the Israelis incur the wrath of GOD. Also, the mistreatment of the Palestinians angers GOD. One would think that Ashkenazi (European) Jews would be particularly sensitive to violating peoples human rights, but evidently they (Ashkenazi Jews) do not speak out about the inhumanly brutal way that the Arabs are treated by the Israeli government. After all, it is the suffering of the Jews of Europe at the hands of the Nazis that is the cause of Palestinian troubles. It is hard to understand why the Palestinians have to suffer because of the crimes of the Nazis. A part of Germany should have been given to the Jews as a homeland instead of Arab Palestine. In the Middle East there must be justice for the people of Palestine. If there is no justice there will be no peace. GOD will not allow the Israelis to live in peace with their Arab neighbors unless they repent to GOD and obey The Law. Clearly the Jews in Israel are unmindful of their Biblical history (Prophet Lot & Sodom and Gomorrah) and/or do not fear the punishment of God.
