Bush: American people "tired of war" in Iraq (Extra)

Jul 12, 2007, 15:19 GMT

Washington - US President George W Bush on Wednesday acknowledged that people were 'tired of the war' in Iraq, but insisted that the conflict was winnable and the security situation improving.

'There's war fatigue in America. It's affecting our psychology,' Bush said at a press conference at the White House. 'This is an ugly war ... It doesn't surprise me that there is deep concern amongst our people.'

Bush said that there had been 'measurable' progress in improving security in parts of Baghdad, Anbar and Diyala provinces and said he would continue to veto any effort by the US Congress to place a deadline for the withdrawal of US troops from the country.

'I cannot look a mother and father of a troop in the eye and say, 'I'm sending your kid into combat, but I don't think we can achieve the objective,'' Bush said. 'I believe we can succeed, and I believe we are making security progress that will enable the political track to succeed as well.'

The White House on Thursday released an interim report on progress in Iraq which found that security benchmarks laid out by Congress had shown improvement, but found little progress in political reconciliation.

Bush insisted he would wait until a September report from military commanders in Iraq before considering any change of course.

George W. Bush's credibility on the war issue is about as fanciful as his claim a few years ago that he had looked into Vladimir Putin's soul.

Mr. President, I voted for you... twice, and given the alternatives, I'd do it again. I support many of your initiatives. But if you believe this war is winnable, I believe you are delusional. Its hardly even a war... its a peace keeping mission, except we caused the peace to cease...

Of course we can win this.Jul 12th, 2007 - 16:18:52

'But if you believe this war is winnable, I believe you are delusional. '

We defeated Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, The British and Spanish empires, Imperial Japan... Of course we can defeat the grubby terrorists making up the insurgency in Iraq. Indeed the alternative to doing that is too horrible to allow.

Well, let me see now. We won WW2, the Korean war but didn't have much success in Vietnam and now this ? Let's get the hell out of there and then nuke the whole region- that would show these guys we mean business...

RE RAMBOJul 12th, 2007 - 17:32:35

When you propose to 'nuke' the whole region i sure hope that you mean to take out both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Most of the 9/11 terrorists, and a huge amount of funding and support for them, came from the deceitful fundamentalist extremist theocratic monarchy ruling Saudi Arabia. Pakistan has nuclear bombs, other WMD, and gave nuke technology to North Korea. Pakistan, with funding from Saudia Arabia, created the Taliban, which took over Afghanistan, and encouraged al queada to establish terrorist training camps in the region. Pakistan currently harbors the 9/11 terrorist leader osama bin laden, and provides safe haven for many other islamic terrorists. Pakistan is a narco-terrorist paradise awash with drug money from the record amounts of opium coming from the terrorist aligned war lords ruling in Afghanistan.
And, Pakistan is a crumbling military dictatorship, so much like Saudia Arabia, there is not any democracy there either.

Forget the war, focus on educationJul 12th, 2007 - 17:39:07

Americans won World War 2? Well, damn, that some impressive victory there, too bad nobody in the world think so, except the Americans. Never mind that Americans never even got to Berlin, or the fact that Hitler had only 28 division deployed against Americans, while close to 300 divisions were deployed against Russians, never mind the fact that WW2 was going on for 5 years before Americans even joined it. Man, I bet in Bush's America 5 years from now they will teach the kids that Iraq war was won by US easily and they found enormous amounts of WMDs there as well... Hell, if he tries, Bush just might rewrite the books about Vietnam war too. Ah, didn't Americans win that?

I will agree with the previous comments that the prez is delusional, but so are all the people who voted for him the second time thinking that he couldn't do any worse. American pride is the only thing left keeping you guys in Iraq. Excuse my short term memory problems, but what was the reason for invading Iraq again? It's pointless, stupid and a waste of innocent lives, billions of dollars and the American image is tarnished beyond repair. You almost impeached a guy for infidelity, yet this joker gets re-elected. I don't get it, but then again my blood isn't red, white and blue...only red and white, I'm Canadian.

Wow, so much stupidity condensed in just a few paragraphs... I am surprised you aren't in Iraq right now, killing all those 9/11 terrorists. Isn't that's where Osama is... oh wait... what? He has nothing to do with Iraq? But they are terrorists nevertheless right? All 660,000 civilians, kids and women... but hey, as long as the war in another country, what does that matter? My fat ass is comfortable in front of my computer.

Bush's lying statements are a continuation of the Big Lie and anybody with a modicum of intelligence knows that. Their constant fabricating, twisting, distorting, manufacturing, and deceit is blowing back at them. Now, they are just urinating in the wind.

hey there, who's comments are you refering to in your tirade? which rambo claimed to see osama bin laden in iraq? which rambo suggested any link between the war of choice in Iraq and the 9/11 terrorists? your fat ass, as you decribe, may be stuck in a computer, or vice versa, but you head sure ain't with it.

Educate yourself, idiot...Jul 12th, 2007 - 22:14:10

' Well, damn, that some impressive victory there, too bad nobody in the world think so, except the Americans.'

Oh, so we lost eh?

'Never mind that Americans never even got to Berlin,'

We have a base there now. Idiot.

'or the fact that Hitler had only 28 division deployed against Americans, while close to 300 divisions were deployed against Russians'

1) You are wrong on the numbers.
2) He was counting on the Emglish channel to protect his western front.
3) You are an asshole.

'never mind the fact that WW2 was going on for 5 years before Americans even joined it.'

Perhaps you should invest in education yourself. That way you can do the simple subtraction between September 1 1939 and December 7th 1941... Hint, it isn't '5 years'.
