Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to visit Russia
Jul 26, 2007, 10:31 GMT
Moscow - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is set to arrive in Moscow Sunday on a three-day visit, the Russian Interfax press agency reported Thursday, citing a Palestinian embassy spokesman in Moscow.
The visit was initially planned for June 19-21, but was postponed after the conflict between the radical Islamist group Hamas and the more moderate Abbas-led Fatah resulted in the former's seizure of power in the Gaza Strip.
Russia along with the United States, the European Union and the United Nations is part of the so-called Quartet of Mideast mediators who aim to help Palestinians build solid foundations for their future state.
Russia has traditionally had a close relationship with the Palestinians in its role as a mediator.
