Third Iran-US meeting scheduled for Monday
Aug 4, 2007, 15:27 GMT
Tehran - The third meeting between Iran and the United States on Iraqi security is due to be held on Monday in Baghdad, Iranian Ambassador to Baghdad Hassan Kazemi-Qomi told state news agency IRNA on Saturday.
Qomi said that the meeting would mainly focus on the trilateral - Iran, US and Iraq - security committee to help bring stability to Iraq as was agreed at the last meeting.
The two political arch-foes had already met in May and July and reportedly held heated and difficult discussions, including Iran's demand from the US to leave Iraq, and the US side accusing Tehran of fuelling violence in Iraq.
Qomi however said that as the Iraqi side was satisfied with the outcome of the talks so far, the three sides decided on their continuation.
Washington and Tehran have said the talks will focus exclusively on Iraq. The two sides do not plan to get into other contentious issues like the Islamic state's nuclear activities or the detention of four US citizens in Iran.
Iran has so far rejected US accusations that it is supporting insurgents in Iraq and in return called on Washington to withdraw US forces from Iraq to end the turmoil in the country.
The US and Iran severed diplomatic ties 27 years ago and have had very little contact since.

Wait a minute, isn't this Barack Obama's new idea? Hopefully, he can beat the Bush administration to Castro and Chavez. Wait again, Michael Moore is playing footsie with Castro and Sean Penn is fawning over Chavez. Are there no despots left for a serious contender?
