Iran condemns reported violation of Syrian airspace by Israel
Sep 6, 2007, 20:15 GMT
Tehran - Iran on Thursday night condemned reports that Israeli fighters had entered Syrian airspace.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki assured his Syrian counterpart Valid al-Moalem by phone of Iran's full solidarity with Damascus over what he called a 'rude violation of Syrian airspace by Zionist (Israeli) jet fighters.'
Syria's SANA news agency and Dubai-based al-Arabiya TV both quoted a military spokesman Thursday saying that Syria opened fire on Israeli war planes which had entered Syrian airspace. An Israeli military spokesman said the army had 'no knowledge' of any such incident, Israel Radio reported.
Mottaki called the Israeli move as a 'futile effort by the collapsing Zionist regime (Israel)' to rehabilitate its armed forces following last year's military defeat in Lebanon, according to a statement by the foreign ministry forwarded to press offices in Tehran.
