Hamas slams Abbas speech before General Assembly as "factional"

Gaza - The Islamic Hamas movement slammed Saturday Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' speech before the UN General Assembly as 'factional and provoking.' 'It incites against Hamas movement and some neighbouring countries,' Hamas spokesman Ayman Taha told reporters in Gaza. In his speech Friday, Abbas said: 'The voice of peace and faith continues to be stronger than any other voice in our country,' referring to Hamas which opposes his recent meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Meanwhile, Saeb Erekat, a senior Abbas aide, said the president and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert were set to meet in Jerusalem in the near future. 'There are some points still under discussion we hope to overcome tomorrow, and then the date of the meeting would be set,' he said. The two have met several times over the past few months, since the US said it would sponsor an international conference on the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. In his speech before the UN, Abbas also said that the Palestinian Authority was fully committed to the conference, likely to be held in November, adding there were no obstacles to holding it. Taha also criticized Abbas optimism regarding the conference, although the Palestinian leader had talked about demands and conditions to make the conference successful. 'The Palestinian president still counts on the November conference and begs the international community for the conference's success, though it is clear the meeting is dead before it starts,' Taha said adding that he did not believe Israel would not make any real concessions. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Islamic Jihad, two smaller factions, both condemned any future meetings between the sides. Also, the Palestinian Journalists' Union condemned break-ins on Friday which targeted newspapers in the Gaza, one affiliated with the Jihad.
