Palestinian militants fire Ketyusha rocket at southern Israel
Oct 7, 2007, 11:43 GMT
Tel Aviv - Palestinian militants fired a Ketyusha missile at southern Israel Sunday morning, in what Israel defence officials fear may mark an escalation in the almost-daily rocket attacks at Israel from the salient.
Police reports said the missile landed on the outskirts of the working-class town of Netivot, which at 11 kilometres from the Gaza Strip is just outside the range of the crude Kassam rockets which militants regularly fire at southern Israel.
It was the first projectile to land in the Netivot environs since militants started firing rockets at Israel. There were no injuries or damage.
Israeli defence officials were quoted as saying the missile was Russian-made and had a 20-kilometre range.
Israel Radio reported that the radical Popular Resistance Committees took responsibility for launching the missile.
