Jordan rejects Israel's appropriation of land east of Jerusalem
Oct 10, 2007, 14:17 GMT
Amman - The Jordanian government on Wednesday rejected Israel's appropriation of Palestinian land near Jerusalem for the construction of a new road as 'contrary' to international law and detrimental to peace efforts.
'The Israeli step also increases tension and could have negative impact on efforts under way to put the peace process on the right track,' government spokesman Nasser Judeh said.
The Israeli Ha'aretz daily reported Tuesday that Israel issued a military order on September 24, confiscating more than 1,100 dunams (more than 1.1 square kilometres) of land to build the road, linking southern East Jerusalem to Jericho in the east.
Israel captured the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day war.
