Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to visit Moscow Thursday
Oct 17, 2007, 14:12 GMT
Moscow - The Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is expected to make a brief visit to Moscow Thursday, the Israeli embassy in Moscow confirmed Wednesday.
During the visit, he is expected to hold talks with Russia's President Vladimir Putin on a range of issues including the Middle East peace process and Iran's nuclear programme, according to the embassy.
In Israel, a spokeswoman for Olmert said that while the Iran nuclear issue would feature in the talks, Olmert was taking the opportunity to update Putin on current Israeli-Palestinian talks ahead of the mooted international meeting on the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
Russia is part of the so-called Mideast Quartet along with the United Nations, the US and the EU that is attempting to resolve the conflict in the region.
During Soviet times, Moscow was an ally of the Palestinians in the conflict with Israel.
