Kurd killed in northern Syria buried

Nov 4, 2007, 11:51 GMT

Damascus - A Kurd killed by Syria's security forces during an anti-Turkish rally in north-eastern Syria has been buried in his hometown of Qamishli, sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa Sunday.

Issa Khalil Hussein was buried on Saturday amid heavy security measures and thousands of Kurds attending, the sources said.

Hussein was among a group of Kurds who gathered on Friday in the city of Qamishli in north-eastern Syria to stage a peaceful protest against possible Turkish incursions in Kurdish northern Iraq to seek out members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The Syrian security forces broke up the protest, killing Hussein and wounding two demonstrators.

'The security forces, violently and unjustifiably, dispersed a peaceful rally called by the Democratic Union Party, to denounce the recent escalation at the Iraqi borders,' according to a statement of the Kurdish Committee for Human Rights received by dpa.

The Democratic Union Party is a strong PKK ally in Syria.

The situation in Qamishili has returned to normal on Sunday, the sources said.

Violent anti-government riots erupted in the city in 2004 and claimed 30 fatalities.

Syria expelled PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan and banned the party to defuse a confrontation with Turkey in 1998.

Damascus has also voided support for Turkey's possible crackdown on the party's rebels operating from northern Iraq after a series of deadly attacks on the Turkish army.
