Jan 18, 2008, 11:50 GMT
Baghdad - At least two policemen were injured on Friday as violence flared in the Iraqi city of Basra, some 550 kilometres south of Baghdad, security sources said.
The two were wounded when militants fired on a police patrol in the Maqal area in southern Basra, sources told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa.
Independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) meanwhile citing local witnesses reported numerous clashes between militants and Iraqi forces in the city, with an unconfirmed number of Iraqis wounded.
Shiite Muslims were in many southern Iraqi cities on Friday ahead of the religious festival of Ashura over the weekend, in which they undertake pilgrimage to a shrine held to be the tomb of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
Security has been tightened in almost all southern Iraqi cities ahead of Ashura celebrations.
