Egypt finds explosives cache near Gaza border
Feb 12, 2008, 11:25 GMT
Cairo - Egyptian security forces found a cache of explosives near the border with the Gaza Strip in the Sinai peninsula, security sources said Tuesday.
The cache, which contained 250 kilos of TNT, was found in a secret depot in Masura in Rafah, three kilometres from Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip.
The find comes days after Egypt sealed its border with the Gaza Strip, ending almost two weeks of freedom of movement for Palestinians.
The border was breached when militants blew up sections of the wall to ease an Israeli blockade.
Illicit weapons activity is a cause for concern in Israel and Egypt. Both countries are at odds over the effectiveness and scope of measures taken by Egyptian security forces to stop weapon smuggling into Gaza.
Egypt has been alarmed by illicit weapons proliferation in the Sinai peninsula since major bomb attacks in tourist resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh, Taba and Dahab caused at least 125 fatalities in recent years.
